  • Really dumb tire pressure question

So I bought a new to me boat / trailer in August. Previous owner said tires were in good shape... long story short three of them have had the treads fall apart and fail so I am replacing all the tires.

Now my dumb question... the new tires all state on the side that max pressure is 80 psi when cold, but when I get them from the tire shop they are only inflated to 50 psi

What should they be inflated to, 50 or 80?

Reading somewhere that some “air down” when transporting an empty trailer to prevent bouncing on the road. Load it up. “Air up”
      just what I read....

Seems like a lot of work to me.

The max load rating is at max pressure, and empty trailer would not be supporting mich weight therefore not much pressure needed.

You just need a way to air up tires prior to retrieving boat!
I just upgraded to D's from C's just for a little more reserve capacity, and it makes me feel better.

            Lots lots of questions:
            Tandem or triple axle trailer?
What is weight of boat, trailer, accessories, fuel?
            Load range ‘E’ tires?
How much trailering do you do—distance & frequency?
I can tell you to max them out cold, but that may not be best scenario until I can get a little more info.

              Tandem Axle
Boat Weight is approx. 5500 lbs
              Load range E
Typical trip to lake is 90 miles round trip, trip to the coast 450 round trip. Hit the lake every week, coast once per month

              Tires are 15 inch

Ok. I’m going to assume 225/75R15. In LR ‘E’ they are rated to appx 2800 pounds at max cold inflation, times 4 = 11,200 lbs capacity all in.
Anywhere 65psi and above will be more than adequate for your application
You did it right! In these applications more is often better. They run cooler, less stress, etc.
Happy trailering, you’re in good shape tire wise!!
