  • Mercury V8 Four Stroke 300 HP, Is it Good?

At long last, getting ready to repower my 97 Proline 251 with a Mercury 300 HP V8 and just wanted to know how they are. I've been looking for online reviews/problems with them. Pretty much just seeing the same stuff but nothing really negative. I did put down a small deposit (refundable) in mid December just to get on the waiting list. Should be in by end of February.

Also having it done at Bass Pro Shops. Any opinion on their installation and service department? They seem like a good outfit to me.

Rated for 300 HP, put a 450r on it at WOT and I'd have a poop deck for sure....💩

I think it will depend on that particular shop.
The 300's have been good, make sure any updates have been done and checked.

I've have a pair. 56 hours. Moved from 250 EFI's. 0 problems. Very quiet, crazy torque at almost any speed. MPG is way better than the EFI's. 25" model weighs 538# - so really good for 2 stroke / conversion repowers. So far, nothing but good things.

What are the pros and cons of a 300 vs Mercury 300 XR as far as lifespan, warranty, insurance, etc? Considering a 1 year old tritoon with a 300 XR on it. Warranty on motor until 2022.

This is a pretty good video pitting the 300 V8 against the 400 6 cylinder Verado on a similar boat. Pretty impressive numbers on the 300s.

                  Which 300?
                  The Inline 6 or V8?
The Inline 300 has been around awhile, the 300R has good warranty.
You running this on a freshwater lake?

                    I found out it’s a 2019 300 XR. I would only use it in fresh water. Don’t know if it’s an 8 or 6.

Started water testing yesterday. It needs to go up one more hole. By the time I got there they were taking it back out of the water ( lots of afternoon wind) so I didn't get a chance to check it out. If I can get away from work today I'm going on the test runs.

I was told that it topped out at 38 MPH turning 6K RPM's according to the Smart Gauge speedo, don't know how accurate that is. Going to raise up the motor with same prop and see what it does. Stay tuned for more!
