  • 96 90hp Mercury cutting out WOT

My 90 Mercury on a 24 ft Pontoon cuts out near and at WOT. It runs great up to that point. I’ve changed fuel filter, plugs, bulb, fuel line, and added fresh gas with sea foam. Carbs were rebuild many years ago. I’m fine running less than WOT but just like my toys to run right!
    Any ideas?

    It "cuts out".
    Dies, kaput, have to restart?
Or it slows down, sputters, dies and have to restart?
Or, it slows down, sputters, but runs at a lower rpm?
Have you tried pumping the bulb when it cuts out?

Are those technical words for a service writer or official mechanic jargon.

      I know, too much fun!
Mercury 2 strokes are strange animals.

      Good luck!

It slows, sputters, doesn’t cut off, but I reduce throttle some and continues running smoothly. Have not tried pumping bulb but will try next chance I have. 😎😂😂😂

You can try that, but it sounds like (without actually hearing it) that it's starving for fuel, since it has been "many years ago" for the carb rebuild, I would look at that.

Mechanic determined it was the voltage regulator. Replaced it and runs fine now. I thought tachometer was bad but now is working again.

With the info provided, never would have guessed a VR being bad.
