  • Well, interesting night. 4am I went outside to tie some stuff down. Wind stopped, just light drizzle. Same conditions now. 2" rain so far.

At 8am NHC said "eye" was 28.4-80.7...I'm 28.4-80.78. I've been thru a bunch of hurricanes but I've never seen one dissipate in such a short period of time.

        • What a mess. Unbelievable and overwhelming to look at.

My parents have a place in Ft Meyers, but they are here for the summer. My sister and niece bunkered down in my parents home there and the only damage was to the lanai, and they lost a small tree in the front yard. Brand new house in area that is higher ground.

Tom....so sorry for what happened to you. At a loss for words.

          • I just saw a Sheriff's video by chopper of what I assume is Sanibel Beachside, because it was showing the bridge, most of the homes on the beach are intact, surprisingly.

Nope. Not even my temporary tarp and frame car cover.

            • According to the forecasts, Ian is going to act just like Irma did. They’re saying Ian will strengthen back to a CAT 1 and make landfall again somewhere near Charleston.
Calling for a 4-6’ surge right now which would flood us worse than Irma, which put ~8” of water downstairs.
No where near the devastation SW FL experienced, but still sucks.

That was just the very Eastern tip by the lighthouse they showed, not to the NW or bay side. We live mid island Gulf side and they haven't shown anything up towards there or any of the West End, Captiva, North Captiva, Cayo Costa, Boca Grande yet. I'm afraid to look. S&R chopper came to rescue the renter family with 4 young children, 3 cats and a dog across the street from us that stayed. He texted me as the water reached 12'+, coming in the doors and windows, "Tom, we're not gonna make it". They went vertical, no other options, and somehow survived. They were very lucky.

I think I’m hurricanes we question whether to stay or evacuate. It’s hard decision. Stay and you think you can fix your house if something happens. Thankfully you guys left and your neighbors survived.

                • For those of you that have a TruthSocial account, this is what a 15 foot surge looks like coming in and going out. Time lapse

                • That is absolutely crazy! You can actually watch the waves take that building down and shove it across the street! WOW!!!

                  • Ian Created absolutely huge wave fr Miami today. Its actually breaking at the Fowey rocks right now. Never seen it break that far out. key Biscayne even has waves. here in Boca its about waist high. Crazy refraction swell for Miami.

                    • Ian’s remnants are over us right now. Thank God it is headed north of us for landfall so we shouldn’t flood. 60 mph wind driven rain. 9” of rain so far.
I’m thankful all I should have to do is clean up. Folks north of us on the coast will get 5-7’ of surge.
