The Jetsons Rosie the robot, here and now.
How does that affect server gratuities?

The one guy was like am I supposed to get it myself? Besides bringing food out, if the server comes out to put it on the table, I wonder what time it saves?

Usually the server was there Jonny/Susie on the spot.
Then if it goes and comes the server doesn't need to go back to the kitchen. It was strange to watch and that one guy couldn't figure it out.

I get it now, you could probably serve s place like that with one server if the bot is bringing the food back-and-forth. Probably need to get the timing down a little better since some people aren’t gonna know what to do when it shows up at their table and just sits there and nobody takes the food off.

I hope it will never catch on in better restaurants I'm not crazy about the idea at all, I want someone to talk to.

We went to some chain place last summer for a lunch, they had electronic ordering tablets on each table. I refused to use them, I'm not doing your job for you and I'm certainly not tipping for a job I did half on my own..

Sad to say I think there will be more and more "automatic" ordering, delivering and just about everything else, it won't just happen, it will just kind of sneak up on us, slowly but surely. I can't wait for a voice recognition robot at drive throughs, even if it's broken, it can't possibly be worse than it is now, with some brain dead kid, with no interest what so ever mumbling into the speaker.

            Where is that? Very interesting.
Didn't know we were that far along any place where that was actually in service

For what it's worth one of the Shoprite supermarkets near me has robots follow you around the store offering you items for sale.

Back when I was working in IT at a local University, part of our team developed an IPad on a kind of Segway, that featured voice recognition, designed for meetings that had a phone linkup as well, you taught it the room layout, and as soon as someone spoke, it zoomed over to them so they could "FaceTime" others via the 'net, when someone else spoke, it zipped over to them, pretty neat back then.

No doubt. I was never a fan of those boardroom to boardroom video calls.
Always tried to make sure our IT guy could come up with a reason for it to be down when a call was scheduled!!

We go to a Sergio’s Latin restaurant close to the house for breakfast once in a while. They have a “skinny breakfast” with egg white omelette and fruit & Yogurt my wife likes, otherwise I wouldn’t go. They hammer my ham & egg omelette consistently on a flat top that is always too hot. Anyway....the last time we went, one of those Toby the Robot food transporters brought the food. This place is in a strip mall and not big at all. Sorry, I just don’t see the need at this establishment.
Yeah, I also don’t dig tableside electronic ordering.

Then don’t go to Pirate Repubic on the river. Went there on New Year’s Day and they no longer have menus.

OMG, Parker, don't get me started on that BS, went some place a couple of years ago and they said it was a covid precaution. Either give me a menu or I'm gone. I don't care if it's a piece of paper, or a chalk board but I'm not scanning chit on my phone. Of course I was the problem, F those family members that will just go along to get along.

We ate at a place in Altamonte Springs that had one of those. It was cool at first but the novelty wore off quick. I wanted to drop a plate or something in front of it to see what it would do but my GF gave me "the look" when I suggested it.

I will say, it did free up the wiatress and allowed her to focus on the clientele more.

Yeah but you know once the owner sees the staff on hand has too much time on hand they will cut staff. If they don't the competition will then they'll be forced to.

it is kind of unnerving when it comes up behind you.

I can see the Toby transporters allowing servers to spend more time near the tables and not having to walk to the kitchen as often.
              THought occurred...
Do the robots deliver the food and return dirty plates or do humans still bus the tables? Hmmmm
Any cleaning in between? How often?
Would like to see a bacteria swab test after some hours of work. If food spills on the tray and remains at temps conducive to bacteria growth, future plates can be contaminated.

They can put an anti bacteria surface on each level and it would.probably be cleaner than the servers hands. Especially some of the servers I have encountered.

Like everything, it will be a slow development, kind of like (say) no menus, then no menus and self ordering, then no menus, self ordering and some kind of near table delivery, and so it will go, until it just becomes "normal" eventually "Rosie" will do the lot, including cleaning the table! Then the need for an "update" to the software, and it has a "minor glitch" and Rosie turns up at your table, slaps your face and flips the food plate on to your lap, then proceeds to wipe the table before you're finished........but that's progress. Then of course, a bit further into the future, there's not even a chef, the entire restaurant is "autonomous" when it comes time to pay you bill, you just tilt your head towards the robot, and the chip injected when you were Covid "jabbed" takes the amount, and issues a receipt (by email of course) you don't pay, big bubba Rosie turns up and beats you to a pulp!
