      ... around here in the 70s, they'd drill small holes in the lower units on the OBs owned by the 'Moonies' (a cult led by the Reverns Sun Myung Moon), covering the holes with wax. The LUs would let go and/or blow up whilst a good 10-20 miles out ...

      I sold and rigged the moonies first merc outboard.
      It was so successful the next year they went around me and ordered their motors directly from merc.

      Here in St Aug we see imigration and homeland guys pulling dummy boats in and out to sea. They come back pretty shot up from target practice. Most of those motors are white and I am not even sure it they are real motors?
