Just asking something here, it appears that there is a multi lane freeway across the US (east to west) is this correct? now if it is correct, does this freeway bypass towns/cities or does it just go through them, causing slow traffic? What about North to South, could I drive from (say" the Canadian border to the Mexican border on a freeway, or would I zigzag through side highways and cities? Currently here (but it's taking decades) our major highway (north to south) is having bypasses built at every town, with an exit if you actually want to enter the town, but like everything, once it's finished, a few houses spring up, or a Macdonalds is built, and it kind of starts all over again.

In the USA there are freeways to bypass the freeways. It’s a tangled web of primary, secondary, federal, and interstate highways. Throw in a few private toll roads owned by foreign companies. The interstates east to west are even numbered and the interstates north to south are odd numbered.

So kind of like here, but in a grand scale? Most cities have privately build toll roads, commuters try to avoid them but that causes havoc on suburban streets, our highway system is pretty bad really, I think because it just evolved rather than very early planning, our major N-S highway started as a single lane road linking towns along the coast, as the population grew, these "highway towns" just created a choke point for traffic, so a bypass was constructed, it's mostly OK these days, but there is a bottleneck at existing towns, especially during holiday time.

Yes! Very similar. We have supreme allied commander and President Dwight Eisenhower to thank for a system of functioning interstate highways. If we were attacked by the USSR we had a way to move military around for national defense.
