    Ever eat them?

    I always threw them back

I set out a trotline last fall in the Suwannee
i was nearer the gulf than inland but figured I was upriver far enough.

man I pulled up 16 sailcats.
    we threw them all back.

over the next week or two my buddy and I would chat to other folks like him and I and they were all “damn why’d you throw them back?! They eat better than freshwater cats” etc

so, what say you guys? Have you tried it?

No we’ve never eaten them but we do catch some really big ones here. My son went through this thing where he said no matter what he caught he would keep as long as it was legal. Tried ladyfish, nasty. He then tried hardhead catfish. He tried and said it was really good. Tried a piece and yep it was very good. The meat is very white and kinda mild. So he dad caught one the other day. My son told him to keep it but his dad said no way that it’s a trash fish. My son told him to keep it anyway. He cleaned and fried it. His dad couldn’t believe how good it was either. Years ago redfish and snapper were considered trash fish. Now they are looked at as some of the best eating fish there is. I guess you never really know unless you try it.

          Big fighters. fun.

not fun taking them off your hook. Especially 16 of them. Lol
did you read about the slime? And what happens if their barbs pierce your flesh?**
nasty thick snot covers their body

but, I’m gonna fry one up next time I get one.

**we were castnetting bait one morning and had 3 tangled in the net.
I got two free. The third was tangled on his barbs. I shook the net. The barb BARELY broke my thumb knuckle skin.
I kid you not, my thumb joint was sore for 6 MOs.

I always hate catching those things when I go saltwater fishing because of those nasty spikes they've got in their fins. Never thought of eating them, but then again, when I go saltwater fishing, we catch so many other fish that are good to eat, maybe that's the reason why we never kept any for the dinner plate.
