  • Internet trolling

Having recently been inferred to as Troll , it got me thinking what a Troll is . Urban dictionary describes it as such-
" Someone who takes pleasure in causing drama by arguing with people without wanting or accepting anyone's response, also known as a "Justin" "

Lifewire says- " In simple terms, trolling is when someone comments or responds to something you post, usually in a confrontational way that is designed to garner a strong, emotional reaction. "
Lifewire then goes on talking about Urban Dictionary and Wikipedia -
"......according to the Urban Dictionary’s top-rated definition for “trolling,” it can be defined as:
"the deliberate act, (by a Troll – noun or adjective), of making random unsolicited and/or controversial comments on various internet forums with the intent to provoke an emotional knee jerk reaction from unsuspecting readers to engage in a fight or argument."

    Wikipedia defines it as:
"a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses and normalizing tangential discussion, whether for the troll's amusement or a specific gain.”

So, it seems that a common theme ( in the definitions cited ) is one of the so called troll wanting to be confrontational, wanting to quarrel ,wanting to fight or argue.
A person shouldn't be considered a troll if they post a comment hoping to get an honest response ,even though the response may be confrontational or seeking a fight .

If a person would engage in what is commonly called " poking the bear " it wouldn't necessarily mean they were trolling or trying to provoke a fight or an argument . They may just be wanting to get a response and not care whether or not that response starts a fight or an argument. If they don't seem to be interested in the response of the bear it may seem they were just trolling.

If a person is posting on the main topic of a discussion, or a topic that developed in that discussion, it would be hard to define their comment as trolling . A good example of trolling would be participating in a discussion on what magazines are available for a particular weapon, by saying " they should outlaw them all "

I think often it is the person accusing someone of being a troll that are actually trolling themselves , when their accusation is not confirmed by what has been posted or explained by them.

Nothing wrong with that. You do occasionally ask for more drama.

I don't think that's the "troll" that trolling refers to. I think it means dragging tasty bait across a forum, hoping for a bite, and a fight. You know, like... trolling.

Maybe instead of calling people who troll "trolls", we should call them "trollers"?

If so, I think it would be wrongly interpreted as such for the reasons I gave.
In order for a post to be considered trolling it would have to have an intent to troll. That was not my intent.

Exactly. My thoughts are any post outside of a post of "Help me my engine keeps overheating and I can't figure it out?" type question can be looked at as a troll, how does one know a persons intent?

You raise a good point . I don't think anyone would know for sure the intent, other than the poster .
For a comment to actually be trolling that would have to be the intent of the poster.

My statement - " In order for a post to be considered trolling it would have to have an intent to troll. " I should have correctly stated " In order for a post to be considered trolling it would have to be considered having an intent to troll.

To further clarify I point to a statement I made on a different thread - " I don't care if you call me a troll, and that is what you are doing, as you may believe that to be true. It is what you consider trolling to be that I am somewhat concerned with. "

I haven't been on this forum much lately and it seems I have missed much of what has gone on. That could be a good thing as it seems some members have been misbehaving. At least I can say that I had nothing to do with it. I know some of my posts have in the past started a bit of drama and some would consider me a troll. Call it drama or trolling. I tend to call it lively debate and see it as entertaining and informative so long as it doesn't devolve to name calling, threats, or ill wishes. As it seems to have happened on some of the threads here. Perhaps stirring the pot is a better term than trolling and I will admit that I have stirred the pot a bit in the past and it has lead to some lively debate. And I believe that is a good thing so no apologies here.

So is trolling or pot stirring a good or bad thing? I guess different people will have different opinions on that. And that's OK with me... Charlie
